South Dakota's History:
  • In 1743 exploration of South Dakota began.
  • Louis Joseph and Francois Verendrye came from France in search of a route to the Pacific Ocean.
  • As part of the Louisiana Purchase, the U.S. acquired the region in 1803.
  • Lewis and Clark had explored the state in 1804-1806.
  • The first permanent settlement the was established was in 1817 and was Fort Pierre.
  • Settlements in South Dakota didn't really take off until the aririval of the railroad in 1873 and the discovery of gold in the Black Hills in 1874.
The statehood of South Dakota was on November 2, 1889.
Historical Sites in South Dakota are Mount Rushmore and Corn Palace.
