Statehood
Virgina was first founded in 1788, when it ratified the constitution and became the 10th state. When Virginia was first discovered in 1585, a large portion was claimed by the English. They named the land Virginia, after Queen Elizabeth the first, "The Virgin Queen".


Jamestown

The first ever settlement made in America was Jamestown, Virginia. Founded in May, 14 1607, Jamestown was the first English settlement in "The New World", what is now known as the United States of America. It was founded by the Virginia company headquartered in London. Jamestown remained the capital of the colony for 83 years. From 1616 to 1698.
Jamestown was almost destroyed in account of lack of water, violent weather, and attacks from Algonquian Indian tribes nearby.By the end of the first year the colony lost 2/3 of their population.If it wasn't for John Smith the colony would have perished. He and Pocahontas, the daughter of Chief Powhatan saved the colony from being destroyed.



Williamsburg

The second settlement made in Virginia was Williamsburg. The college that was named Will and Mary was later named the town Williamsburg. Williamsburg became the new capital after Jamestown. Today, Colonial Williamsburg is a big tourist attraction. They have an historical reanactment in the town. You will get to learn how people prospered in Colonial times. It is a fun experience for all.
